LME beefs up Steel Committee ahead of new ferrous contracts launch

The London Metal Exchange (LME) has just bolstered its Steel Committee, as it inches closer to the launch of two new ferrous contracts – steel scrap and steel rebar – in November.

The LME announced today the appointment of four new members to the Steel Committee, whose main responsibility is to ensure that the LME’s activities and initiatives in steel represent the industry’s needs, and to recommend initiatives and changes it considers appropriate.

The new members of the Steel Committee are:

  • Spencer Johnson, INTL FCStone;
  • Phillip Killicoat, Goldman Sachs Commodities;
  • Gianpiero Repole, Liberty Commodities;
  • William Schmiedel, Sims Group Global Trade Corporation.

“We are pleased to welcome these new members to the Committee,” said Matthew Chamberlain, Head of Business Development. “The Steel Committee has been influential in the design of the LME’s new suite of cash-settled steel contracts, and we value the expertise these new members will bring as we head towards launch.”

In addition, the LME today announced the appointment of industry veteran Christian Schirmeister as a senior consultant in its Product Development team. In this role, he will be responsible for promoting the new ferrous contracts to the industry. Mr Schirmeister previously worked in the Global Commodities Group at JP Morgan, and prior to that spent 13 years at Germany’s Metallgesellschaft AG.
