McDonald’s Ends AI Trial But the Future Is Unclear

McDonald’s (MCD) is to end its AI trial that has been taking place at more than 100 of its restaurant locations across the US. While no official reason has been given for bringing this trial to a close, a spokesperson said that its plans for the automation of orders would be available by the end of 2024. They also confirmed that the use of a “voice-ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurants’ future.”

The fast-food chain has been using AI systems to respond automatically to customer orders as part of its deal with IBM, which has been in place since 2021. The trial is set to end on 26 July, with some industry analysts wondering what this decision means regarding the possible rollout of AI across the leading fast-food businesses.

This industry has been showing a lot of interest in adding generative AI to make operations faster and more cost-effective by replacing human workers. This has become a more pressing concern amid rising labour costs, as is the case in California, where a new minimum wage law has been implemented.

Apart from MCD, other companies such as Carl’s Jr and Wendy’s have also been trying AI systems at their drive-thru locations. Yum Brands (YUM) is the company that operates KFC and Taco Bell, and it has announced a move towards using AI at its restaurants. While YUM wouldn’t say how much it’s investing in the technology, the company’s chief digital and technology officer, Joe Park, said earlier this year that they have the vision of an AI-powered future.
