In a move that surprised investors, OpenAI, Inc., the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Friday that Sam Altman will depart as chief executive officer (CEO) and no longer serve on the board. The company’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, will step in as interim CEO. Immediately after Altman’s dismissal, Microsoft announced that Altman has joined the company’s new advanced AI research team.
Microsoft swoops in as OpenAI board shows Sam Altman the door
Murati has been part of the OpenAI leadership team for five years. In its press release, the company stated:
Mira has played a critical role in OpenAI’s evolution into a global AI leader. She brings a unique skill set, understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, and already leads the company’s research, product, and safety functions.
OpenAI went on to say they anticipate this transition to be seamless while canvassing a new CEO. In the media statement, this company quoted the following reasons for Altman’s termination of employment:
Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.
The restructuring also included Greg Brockman, co-founder, to step down as chairman of the board and report to the newly appointed interim CEO. He, however, resigned mere hours after this press release saw the light and has already joined his former colleague at rival, Microsoft, also researching AI technologies.

Reportedly, Brockman posted on X that the board took both him and Altman by surprise and they are still trying to wrap their heads around the events. His post stated:
If I start going off, the OpenAI board should go after me for the full value of my shares.
