Cboe Global Markets reported strong trading volumes for January 2025, with S&P 500 Index (SPX) options averaging 3.46 million contracts per day, marking the second-best month on record for the product.

The firm said SPX options saw notable growth in short-dated contracts and global trading hours activity.
On January 31, a record 2.42 million zero days to expiry (0DTE) SPX contracts were traded, the highest single-day volume for 0DTE options.
Additionally, January 27 is said to have set a new record for global trading hours, with 253,000 SPX contracts changing hands between 7:15 PM and 8:25 AM CT.
Overall, Cboe’s index options ADV grew 10.1% year-on-year to 4.54 million contracts, while multiply-listed options surged 24.5% to 13.15 million contracts per day.
Cboe revealed that U.S. equities trading also saw gains, with on-exchange matched shares up 6.5% compared to January 2024.
European equities trading increased 20.9% to €11.42 billion, and Japanese equities volumes jumped 19.7%. Meanwhile, global FX trading rose 12.3% to $50.31 billion daily.
