Deutsche Börse has announced that the gold holdings of Xetra-Gold (ISIN: DE000A0S9GB0) amounted to 181.34 tonnes at the end of the first half. At the beginning of the year, they amounted to 175.04 tonnes.
The holdings always increase when investors buy Xetra-Gold units via the stock exchange. Exactly one gram of gold is deposited in the central vault for German securities in Frankfurt for each unit. The assets under management of Xetra-Gold currently amount to around 6.3 billion euros. This makes Xetra-Gold the leading gold security in Europe with a physical deposit.
Of all commodities traded on Xetra (Exchange Traded Commodities, ETC), Xetra-Gold is the security with the highest turnover. In the first half of 2018, order book turnover was 1.29 billion euros.
Xetra-Gold investors are entitled to delivery of the physical gold. Since the introduction of Xetra-Gold in 2007, investors have made use of this option 991 times. A total of 4.9 tons of gold were delivered.
In September 2015, the Federal Fiscal Court announced that gains from the sale or redemption of Xetra-Gold after a holding period of one year would not be subject to capital gain compensation tax (Abgeltungssteuer). Thus, for tax purposes, the purchase and redemption or sale of Xetra-Gold is treated as a direct purchase or direct sale of physical gold such as gold bars or gold coins.
