Amazon Reported to Be Set to Spend Billions on Italian Data Centre

According to the latest reports, Amazon’s AWS computing division (AMZN) will spend billions of euros expanding its data centre operations in Italy. The investment would be a significant boost for its cloud services business across Europe and another sign of the resurgence in the cloud computing industry.

The plans are said to still be at an early stage, with the exact details of where the site will be located and how big it will be yet to be decided.

AWS entered the cloud business in Italy in 2020 and currently has clients like Assicurazioni Generali and Ferrari. The initial plan involves investing €2.2bn before 2029. AWS has been active in other parts of Europe recently, with a €15.7bn investment made in data centres in the Aragon region of Spain.

AWS also has plans to invest €7.8bn in German data centres until 2040. Part of the reason for this expansion is to ensure a higher level of data privacy by keeping the data stored on servers in the European Union.

It’s thought that the current high levels of interest in artificial intelligence will continue to drive spending on cloud computing.

Alphabet (GOOGL) has also been investing heavily in Italy, with €1bn pumped into the country to create the two cloud regions that provide their services to companies like Intesa Sanpaolo, which is the biggest bank in Italy and has been using their cloud services since 2020.

Enrico Bagnasco, who is the Executive Director of Information Systems at the bank, stated:

A cloud hyperscaler like Google with two regions on the national territory will facilitate all Italian companies and the Public Administration in accessing the cloud.
