Nagasaki will steer the ChatGPT maker’s commercial and marketing efforts and grow the company’s Global Affairs, Go-to-Market, Communications and Operations in Japan. OpenAI published the statement on Sunday, 14 April 2024 and wrote:

As we grow our operations internationally, we’re expanding into Asia with a new office in Tokyo, Japan.

The organisation indicated that this expansion is set to enhance interactions with clients such as Daikin, Rakuten and Toyota, which use ChatGPT for automation, data analyses and reporting. OpenAI also emphasised the benefits of ChatGPT for local governments and its collaboration with Yokosuka City and a network of local governments.

The Stanford Institute for Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence (HAI) found that “global investment in AI fell for the second year in a row in 2023”. This slump may, in part, be motivating OpenAI’s strategic expansion. Sam Altman, the organisation’s chief executive officer, said:

We’re excited to be in Japan which has a rich history of people and technology coming together to do more. We believe AI will accelerate work by empowering people to be more creative and productive, while also delivering broad value to current and new industries that have yet to be imagined.

The company also indicated that it chose Japan because of its “global leadership in technology, culture of service, and community that embraces innovation”. According to a CNBC report, OpenAI’s market value is close to $100bn.
