Atlético Madrid is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid that plays in Liga BBVA, commonly known as ‘La Liga’, which is the top professional association football division of the Spanish football league system.
The club is the current champion of La Liga after winning the 2013/14 season – representing its tenth victory of the competition. Atlético Madrid has won the Copa del Rey on ten occasions along with other Spanish cup competitions. The team won the UEFA Super Cup in 2010 and 2012, and came second in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.
Atlético Madrid resides at the Vicente Calderón stadium, which has capacity for almost 55,000 spectators, and in the near-future will be moving to a new, state-of-the-art stadium that will have a capacity of around 70,000.
According to UEFA’s league coefficient, La Liga has been the strongest league in Europe over the past five years as well as the top league in Europe for more years combined (16 years) than any other European league.
In addition, it is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, with the third-highest average match attendance figures for 2013/14 of any professional association football league and eighth-highest of any domestic professional sports league worldwide.
