When Do U.S. Election Polls Close?

Today, millions of Americans are heading to the polls to choose their next President: Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. While over 81 million early ballots have already been cast, most voters will vote today to decide who will occupy the White House and control the Senate.

Initial election results will start coming in this evening. However, because of time differences across the 50 states and the District of Columbia, these results won’t appear simultaneously. Knowing poll closing times is especially important for traders and investors, with a close eye on the seven battleground or “toss-up” states that account for 93 of the 538 Electoral College votes. A candidate needs 270 to win.

Note that results won’t be reported immediately when polls close, as counting will still be underway. Key battleground states’ results are expected to be reported between 11:00 pm and midnight ET (4:00-5:00 am GMT Wednesday). In a post by FP Markets Chief Markets Analyst, Aaron Hill, the times of poll closures was broken down.
